The Chronicle also reports that the average pay for a correctional officer in the state is $63,000 a year. It’s hard to come up with a clear figure in a state that has fewer than a thousand correctional officers.
Because of their high pay, correctional officers are a prime source of employment for many prisoners. They are also a primary source of income for many prison directors, who receive salaries in the vicinity of $80,000 a year. That means that they are also one of the best sources of income for prison administrators. In my opinion, these guys should actually be required to work as much as the rest of the prison staff, if not more.
While prison jobs aren’t perfect, they are certainly good for a lot of people. While many prisons are overstaffed and underfunded, they are also much more cost-effective than many other job programs. In fact, many prison jobs are so good, they could easily pay for themselves.
So much of the prison system is based on the idea that incarceration is a form of punishment. This is obviously not true. In fact, as a result, nearly every prison is overburdened, overpopulated and understaffed. This is something I’m sure you’ve heard of, but its so rarely talked about that the term “overstaffed” is thrown around more often than the term “understaffed.
To put it simply, more correctional officers means more people to serve. A large proportion of that staff is either overstretched or understaffed. In Texas, for example, the state has over one million correctional officers. So even if you were to make a huge investment, it wouldn’t be enough to pay for itself.
I think most of the time, it’s about time. I don’t mean to be harsh, but you shouldn’t forget that some of the most amazing things about Texas are the lack of real life police departments that serve the population. That’s one of the things that makes up the vast majority of law enforcement officers in Texas.
